The Cat 349 with 2D Cat Grade Control (standard on the Cat 349) provides visual guidance to the operator for grade control via the touch screen display for more accurate operations. Caterpillar says the Cat 349 and 352 excavators operate more efficiently than the F-Series models in the same tonnage class by 45 percent, fuel efficiency by 10 percent and maintenance costs by 15 percent. The machines also reflect Ct’s naming program, in which Cat will remove letter names when it introduces new models.

Both excavators come standard with Ct2D slope, which provides the operator with visual slope guidance for more accurate cuts via a touch screen display. The system can be optionally upgraded to Advanced2D and 3D.

Other technologies available on both machines include:

1. Slope assist systems that automatically perform dynamic arm and bucket movements to help operators of all skill levels operate more efficiently.

2. Caterpillar Payload provides continuous weighing; real-time payload estimates can be calculated without oscillation to help prevent truck overloads and underloads.

3. Lift Assist calculates the weight of the actual load to be lifted and compares it to the excavator’s rated capacity. Visual and audible alarms indicate whether the machine is within safe working range.

4. Electronic fencing prevents the excavator from moving beyond operator-defined points, helping to protect the machine, underground utilities and appliances from damage.

5. Cat Product Linki provides machine operating data through the online VisionLink interface.

6. Fuel efficiency is work per unit of fuel, and the 349 does more work than the 349F.

Caterpillar uses the new SmartMode system on both machines to reduce fuel consumption by matching engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions. When hydraulic demand is reduced, engine speed is automatically reduced. The new on-demand cooling system fan also saves fuel. Owners can choose a reverse function to help clean debris from the cooling core.

Caterpillar says the new electro-hydraulic control system’s main control valve eliminates the need for pilot lines, reducing pressure loss and lowering fuel consumption. This can result in lower oil requirements and operating costs.
